A fairy tale

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl, “Will you marry me?”

The girl said, “No!”

And the girl lived happily ever after and went shopping, dancing, camping, drank martinis, always had a clean house, never had to cook, had sex with whomever she pleased… did whatever the hell she wanted, never argued, travelled more, had many boyfriends, saved more money, had all the hot water to herself, watched chick flicks, never wore that fracking lacy lingerie that went up her ass, had high self esteem, never cried or yelled, felt and looked fabulous in sweat pants, and burped, swore and farted all the time.

The End.

A reading room with a secret wine cellar?! Literally the room of my family’s dreams.

When I grow up, my house is going to look like that.

Needs more vodka.
Otherwise, perfect.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
*runs around flailing*

quote

"I don’t think it’s terribly controversial to note that women, from a young age, are required to consider the reality of the opposite gender’s consciousness in a way that men aren’t. This isn’t to say that women don’t often misunderstand, mistreat, and stereotype men, both in literature and in life. But on a basic level, functioning in society requires that women register that men are fully conscious; it is not really possible for a woman to throw up her hands and write men off as eternally unknowable space aliens — and even if she says she has, she cannot really behave as though she has. Every element of her life — from reading books about boys and men to writing papers about the motivations of male characters to being attentive to her own safety to navigating most any institutional or professional or economic sphere — demands an ironclad familiarity with, and belief in, the idea that men really are fully human entities. And no matter how many men come to the same conclusions about women, the structure of society simply does not demand so strenuously that they do so. If you didn’t really deep down believe that women were, in general, exactly as conscious as you, you could probably still get by in life. You could probably still get a book deal. You could probably still get elected to office."

This was why my 5th Form English teacher giving us Anne McCaffrey’s “Dragonflight” to read was a truly radical act.

Why should it be up to me to do all the heavy lifting all the time?
Man: *says something sexist*
Woman: *giggles*
Me: "Don't let him get away with saying that. Do something!"
Woman: "I'd have to care enough to do something about it."
Me: *facepalm, sigh*

It’s contrary to Maori values to have the government interfere in matters of the whanau. The whanau, as the Maori Party often says, is an autonomous unit and, on my understanding of the values of our people, should be free from undue interference and influence from outsiders – read the government. Also, and more importantly, issues of over-fertility are not viewed as a problem in Te Ao Maori - its welcomed.

New Zealand’s women hating continues as the government announces access to free contraception. Sounds great! Ah, but only a) if you’re female b) if you’re on the DPB c) certain long-term contraceptives.

I’m so incensed I can barely think straight, so here are some links to immediate reactions…

Yesterday somewhere between 2000-5000 people marched in Wellington against the government’s plans to partially sell state assets. This followed a similar sized march in Auckland last weekend and a week-long hikoi starting in Cape Reinga. After last year’s record low voter turn out, it would seem…
